Right. So I would have to bypass the winding plus emitter resistor with
the cap, which would still leave the transformer (unnecessarily) loaded
with that resistor. Certainly not elegant.

Yes, that makes sense, but it isn't exactly an elegant solution either, just
as you say. So, I'm convinced that this Urei circuit is not made that way
to make dc compensation, but to give some local feedback. (I was aware
of feedback over several stages including the transformer - to linearise
the transformer - but doing a similar thing as a "local feedback" is new
to me.)
