[sdiy] Cutting rotary encoder shafts??

This may be somewhat off topic. I'm building a module that uses a 4-bit
grey rotary encoder. Digikey only carries one that I could find:
CT3003-ND

It's a great encoder, but the shaft length is too long and looks downright
ugly with a knob on it. Is it possible or practical to cut the shaft down
using some widgety-do gizmo saw? (Hacksaw maybe?)

Thanks!
