You might want to check out the (ahem) Blacet Filthy Filtre.

Complete professional quality kit with very complete (and accurate!)
documentation. Lots to learn by going this route and you will end up
with a very useful filter.

You can't build something like this yourself and get the same quality
for the price, once you consider that your *time* is worth something.

That said, I still would encourage the DIY spirit...that's where I
started and it was a lot of fun.
