For some reason "Hammond X-77" comes to mind...

I only ever did a service call on one of these,  and the guy who owned it 
traveled around,  playing at various lounges,  etc. with an RV.  He'd taken 
it on himself to spray that roller assembly with some sort of contact cleaner 
that unfortunately attacked the plastic,  and then to compound things used a 
hair dryer to clean it out.  I don't think that the assembly was available 
any more at that point in time.

I don't think this was a ribbon controller of the sort you found on,  say,  a 
Polymoog,  which generated a CV -- I think it was more of an "arpeggiator" 
kind of a deal.
