Buchla did a capacitive sensing slide controller in the
217 Touch controlled voltage source. I never got
around to building one to see how smooth the response
was. Schematics are out there...

Two more "traditional" resistove options. I stripped the
conductive plastic layer out of a length of Musicflex
cable and stuck a plastic knitting needle through it
for strength. I was still thinking about how to make
decent end connections when I was distracted by -

the wire out of an old Spectrol ten turn pot. These have
a resistance wire element wrapped around the inside in
a spiral, and when unwound you get approx 60cm of
resistance wire. End to end resistance is obviously the
same as the pot, so available in a variety of values.

Anyone tried an ultrasonic approach? I know this is
drifting into theremin territory, but there was something in
a UK electronics mag a few years ago that used a pair of
ultrasonic transducers to measure distance and output
a frequency for musical purposes. Just a pair of transducers
and a PIC microcontroller...
