[sdiy] DIY slide-bars

Hi!

As I have been looking more and more on the 70thies stuff I see one thing that
I kind of would like to see more off, or at least be able to test - the slide
bar. They existed as add-ons to Moog Modular, MiniMoog and where there on the
Yamaha monsters GX-1 and CS-80 to mention a few cases.

Now comes the questions I would like to know the answers to:

1) How did these classic slide bars work? What materials etc. was there?

2) How could one make one today? I am looking for a fairly stable design, so
   antistatic foam is out, OK?
