For starters, aluminum is the wrong type of metal. Soft iron, as used in
transformers, would be much better. Iron concentrates, or "focuses" in a
sense, the magnetic flux from the coils of wire. What you are trying to
build is really a type of transformer, but with a physical gap between the
primary and secondary windings. The larger the gap, the less power that
will be coupled.
