Surrey, eh?  My old stomping ground, as it were.  Is Roger Seebold 
still around the lab these days?  He knows a thing or two about MIDI.  
Both my undergrad and my Masters project involved MIDI.  You can still

Yes, this is the place to ask all manner of synth-related questions 
(how far you push the "related" bit is another matter...)
