Yep, sorry I left that out.  I was in error on the title.

They're terrible once they get used more than a few times.  I used to 
work in a university electronic music studio that had an RCA connector 
patchbay, if you can believe that.  They were always having problems 
with intermittents.

Well, if you're comfortable working with tubes (I am), I would look 
through lots of old hi-fi electronics books from the '40s-'60s.  The 
interlibrary loan is your friend.  : )  Maybe there are more recent 
designs as well using solid-state parts?  But I'm sure you'd find 
something.  Also check Tremaine's "Audio Cyclopedia".
