I've seen them for $4 at surplus places like (maybe) bgmicro.com, but they
admittedly have a limited selection of values. I have no idea what new ones
cost, but people pay $5 or $6 for plain old pots, so what do you consider a
sane price? :-)

They make a few variations. Look on Doepfer's English home page, right near
the top, where it says "Examples of MIDI controllers built by our customers
based on Pocket Electronic, CTM64, MTC64, Dial Electronics and so on."
