Buffered.

There was an "A" series that was 'unbuffered'.

The input impedance of the A series would vary with
the logic state of the inputs... so if you consider a
three input gate... there would be different input
requirements depending on how many other inputs were
high
or low.

A series has slightly less propagation delay. 

B series is the standard today...  but some devices
are essentially A series (4049, 4069UB etc)
