BTW using cascaded rectifier stages is pretty much a loser imho. It looks
good for a sine wave...
but guitar is fairly sawtooth shaped. Double rectification does not 'fill in
the holes" in the middle
very well at all.

How about a variable lag circuit ?   you could keep fast attack but add a
slope on the decay
