Well, for me, thru-hole or point-to-point analogue electronics have always been
my hobby, not digital or SMD. It's not nostalgia, it's what I LIKE TO DO. I
have all the tools and equipment that I need that I have slowly gathered up
over the years at minimal cost. I would much prefer that all parts stay
available forever, I get no thrill from trying to source a rare or obsolete
part.
For digital or surface mount work I would have to almost start over again, new
test gear and totally new construction tools/techniques and parts. And I don't
enjoy writing code, I'd rather be building something that I can actually see
and feel.
So for me, it's a matter of longstanding preference. I do try and adapt to new
techniques like SMD and digital stuff as well, but as a grumpy old fart, I
still prefer tubes and discrete parts.
Take care,
Doug
