Well, I wouldn't be too astonished if Philips et al. would slowly phase
out anything but basic logic functions and drivers. The curse of
integration... Any bigger company uses CPLDs and FPGAs, for big runs even
ASICs. The few hobbyists probably aren't worth the business. Neither are
the rather scarce repair shops.

I always liked the "Lego" approach of 74xx and 40xx, but since I got too
lazy to etch PCBs myself I also see the benefit of tighter integration as
it brings down PCB costs significantly.
