Going back a decade-ish I was a student in a corrosion science
laboratory. I think I've forgotten most of it, but with that cell I
would expect there to be pitting corrosion. This is a breakdown in the
surface oxidation on the aluminium at specific points which will
corrode a bit then reoxidise. This should cause the potential of the
cell to vary in some way. There is serious research going on studying
this electrochemical noise, I would expect there to be particular
frequencies characteristic of the cell.
