I have a very old Nat Semi book that I bought from Radio Shack.  It is a collection of applcation notes.  One of them is a long note on the LM3900.  I've tried to read it several times.  The LM3900 is an interesting and unique chip.  The note presents many different example applications.  The current mirror input is rather special.  Downside is that the specs are not very good by today's standards.
