It doesn't cost 5 times as much, only a little bit more.
But it isn't as easy to use. You need a hotter tip for a start.

Personally I'll be stocking up on leaded solder.
Lead-free isn't any safer from the point of view of the constructor. It's
the flux fumes that do the real harm.
They're banning lead solder to stop lead getting into the water table from
landfill sites full of last year's must have gadget...
