As has been mentioned Analog or Digital have there place in the conceptual
ear of the composer and performer.

As to building one or the other, the skill are different but related.  If
you are a product manufacturer it is actually very easy to deal with surface
mount and hi-density component. For DIY mordern packages linear or digital
require some brainstorming, new tools, and often "adapters".

Regarding development boards mentioned, these devices are typically
development tools not production components (but you will see them at whiles
in production products).

Development Boards or more rightly "evaluation modules" are perfect for DIY
whether Digital or Analog. These devices are usually quite integrated
engendering a fully functional platform to which you can add your specific
circuitry which need not be SMT or of high production technique.

I have built many devices in the past where EVM's where the core of these
one of a kind devices whether DSP, Micro, logic, or linear.
