I thought the "standard" way of producing an impulse for this purpose
was to employ either a powerful enough electrostatic discharge or a
suitably sized explosion. The latter is certainly not in DIY territory
(at least not trouble-free :-), as you need very fast explosives (i.e.
the gooey stuff that is normally used for the initiating the slow
charge) for good results.
