i prefer hybrid over totally digital, though not digitally controlled. my
first 'real/actual' synth [ before i started getting really into anything
with synths/analog], was a roland gr-700 with a g-707 guitar. from that as a
starting point, and then getting a korg dss-1, and some other DCO/hybrid
synths. because of them, and because i am very visual, i dont hate it, but
programming digitally controlled synths is almost painful. the only
advantage of this that i see, is that you appreciate the outcome of making a
patch much more.

on analog vs digital oscillators... i pretty much half agree with the phrase
"its all in the filters"

digital filters, it obviously depends on what its based on etc., comparing
the filters in my nord micro, to my electrix filter factory, i think they
both sound awesome.

digital control of modulars, other than things like matrix style or
preconfigured patching, i just dont see the real use in. for me, part of
using analog gear is being able to see what im doing, and being able to do
what ever you want by turning knobs or swapping cables. if everything will
be presetable or digitally controlled... it is a cool idea... [an analog
nord modular anyone?], but then all it really would be then, is an extremely
flexable digitally controlled synth, and not really modular at all.

about 'boom boom boom' techno/electronic music, theres still a lot of
electronic music that isnt like that. my band [grindcore/metal] is pretty
much 50% electronic right now. me playing guitar, someone on vocals, and
then a sequencer running everything else. lots of metal set to dance beats.
but still, 'boom boom boom' is what techno etc is based on. you need to
dance beat because thats what the music is there for. listen to some old
rock and roll, how many have repeting traditional rock beats? its whats over
it that counts.

i hate 'essential listening' and 'list your favorite band' type threads.
why? my top three favorites:
adam ant, kmfdm, nordcore gmbh and daughters.
pop/old punk, industrial, hardcore/gabba and grindcore respectively.
most of my records are metal and hardcore and punk bands, experimental, and
assorted electronic stuff. i still have a handful of records ive never
listened to, and im not going to put them off to go buy some tangerine
dream. if its something obscure or interesting, thats one thing, but when
its someone huge... what is really the point of recommending them to
someone. im not going to go on some rock forum and tell people to check out
some guns and roses or album. . . [guns and roses?!?!?]

i like to remember than essential, and recommended, are two separate things.

what i recommend to people:
- Pram - Dark Island, which i think is awesome, one of the bands you can
listen to over and over, which would best fit under jazz/synth/dub/pop
[rosie, the singer, is also wife to tele:funken... who is very cool too]
- the soundtrack from donnie darko... cool movie with a great original sound
track, 80s hits are always fun, but i like the original music just as much,
really cool soundscape stuff.

> PS : did I drive this thread totally OT ?

no but i think i did... :P

sigh

- nate - www.robot-dreams.com/sd/ - teenagercore

at least when i turn 18 i can go to shows at clubs.
