If by essential you mean historically important: Gordon Mumma's "Studio Retrospect" (Lovely Music) has been in pretty heavy rotation in my work-room lately.

I've just come across Elaine Raigue on a release from fringerecordings.com, "Geelriandre/Arthesis"... 1972, important foundation for "ambient" aesthetic, seems to me. Some of her more recent work is on my shopping list.

and various recordings by Thomas Lehn have been REALLY crucial for me, lately... especially his live improvised duet/ensemble work. Just watching some DVD video last nite, including his work from the 2002Amplify box set on Intransitive--opening up some new directions for me personally.

as someone else suggested, tho, i think what's "essential" has more to do w/ the musical direction, than w/ just the technology. tomita and keith emerson and laurie spiegal and nerve net noise may all be essential, but to some very different constituencies.
