[sdiy] Solder differences: what to look for?

I bought some more solder the other day, and ive just gone to use it.

Simple job, just soldering some plugs on, but ive made a right mess of it.

The melting point of the solder seemed a bit higher, so more contact with
the iron needed on the joint, and ive gone and melted the platic on the plug
too : (

Hmm.. Looking at the pack now, i see that it says lead free.  Now i heard
rumour of lead solder being filtered out (at least in the uk?)

Anyway, it looks like i should buy some lead solder.  What should i look out
for?
