Maybe yes, maybe no.  The Chowning patent specifically describes
really slow multi-cycle-shift-and-add multiply operations while the
Yamaha patent shows how it can be done without any real-time
multiplies.

Certainly both parties were aware of the expense of real-time
multiplies, but I can't say that I know who was actually responsible
for turning the technical limitation into a new expressive tool.
