In 1983 (when the DX7 was introduced), good sounding digital filters were 
still at least another three or four years away.  I could be wrong, but I think 
the Roland D-50 (1987) was one of the first mass-produced synths to have 
reasonably decent sounding digital resonant filters (not by today's standards, but 
pretty good for then).
