agreed, guys. actually i have a yamaha ds-55 (the half keyboard half synth version of the dx-series) and right above it a cs10 with an external input. i guess tomorrow i'll try how the 'new' yamaha sounds through an 'old' yamaha's filter.
what the dx's could have been, so to say..;-)

btw was there any reason no filters were included in the design of the dx?

  Can only agree here, aliasing can be very effective all by itself.   The use of filters doesn't have to eliminate aliasing but can also "feather" the aliasing for dynamic effect.   Hi Q filters can "tease" this aliasing as well.

  I'll stop here as my language is sounding like audiophile speak.

  to be honest, i find the aliasing and noise from an fm synth adds to its timbre and personality. just like early digital can give certain drum sounds that extra 'something'. especially in bass sounds, you can really make a dx synth sound nasty. filtering will pretty much remove that..
