Actually it is not all that hard, but it is involved.
Number one requirement:The use of a microprocessor for allocating notes to
hardware.
Back in 1978 I built a poly (four voice). You need, of course, a number of
identical synth channels, and an interface between your keyboard and the
synth hardware, which consists of the micro controller. John Simonton
(Paia), I would say, pioneered the DIY poly with the 8700 keyboard.
The software for doing the control is not complicated. On a 6502 that I
used, the firmware used up a whopping 256 bytes or so of code space, and
used about 64 bytes or ram. Although, I originally used a Polymorphic 8813
(S100 based) computer to do the job originally.
Old issues of Polyphony, from the 1975-76 era should have a lot of articles
on the subject.
