I started with the "Easy Pic'n" book.  I think you can get it from Jameco and probably many other places.  It'll get you started with the PIC16F84 which is in many ways a plain old vanilla PIC.  All other 16F series parts are peripheral or memory improvements.  You should find that you'll quickly outgrow the book and find yourself reading the data sheets instead.
