[sdiy] RE: how it all started

time for another type of story:

i got into diy in my early 30's, not via school, university, computers,
magazines, synths or good teachers. i'm totally useless at anything with
more than 2 variables, or math/physics generally. i was always nterested in
how things worked, but electronics were, and still are, for a big part a
mystery to me.

as a musician, i read about speak & spells, and circuit bending. this was
something i could actually do, and worked as well. through that, i generally
got more interested in modifying stuff i had, like drum machines. as the
owner of a bunch of old synths, it's also quite handy to know something
about them.
i've built a few things, like the 76477 box, some of ken stone's things, and
some things from simple schematics. if it's easy and has a circuit board, no
problem. if i have to build something from a schematic, i still have a hard
time understanding anything but the bare basics...
