yeah, max/msp is one piece of software taught me a
great deal about (digital) audio and synthesis. and
it's patching paradigm can be really helpful for
visualizing control flow and figuring out problems
quickly.
even after several years of experience with building
software based instruments, i still prefer
hardware-based instruments. i began learning
electronics to build physical interfaces for my
software, but i soon got into hardware diy without the
umbilical cord. i crave the immediacy of a physical
instrument (even if it is knobs, switches, and patch
cords)...ultimately it is a shortcoming of the
physical interfaces to my software developments, but
in the meantime, i plan to work on both.
there's no reason software diy and hardware diy can't
coexist peacefully.
