Thanks, Scott! Yes, I've been thinking about the FatMan kit for starters and
maybe even take on the 9700S at some point. But, I have a lot of preperation
to do before I go tackling big projects. Need to brush up on my soldering
skills (it's been a while). Would like to learn about reading schematics and
doing so confidently.
I have an electronics textbook entitled "Essentials of Electronics" by Frank
D. Petruzella
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0078210488/qid%3D1075839841/sr%3D11-
1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/002-8898352-6669639) that I got from a friend that I
thought I'd might study. It's for "non-majors".
There seems to be a good book entitled "Teach Yourself Electricity and
Electronics" By Stan Gibilisco
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0071377301/002-8898352-666963
9?v=glance&me=ATVPDKIKX0DER&st=books) that I might check out as well. It
seems to be more in-depth.

Welcome to you!
The PAiA FatMan kit is an inexpensive way to get an introduction to analog
synth technology. While not modular, it is quite musically useful and the
manual all by itself is a fair amount of education.
As far as education, you've come to the right place. The people here are
incredibly generous and kind as teachers and contributors of personal
intellectual work product. I, for one, have benefited greatly from many of
them.
If you are interested, I have a FatMan site at:
http://home1.gte.net/res0658s/FatMan/
which has mods, addons and "Stuff".
With the help of these most wonderful people, I have been able to design my
own circuits which appear as mods and addons on my site.
