i saw some mention in this thread of serge
tcherepnin's ubiquitous use of the LM3900 in alot of
early modular designs.
it was my great good fortune recently to correspond
with serge, and i briefly asked him about the 3900 -
he reponded that in '71 or '72 he had begun thinking
about making a "people's synthesizer" and saw the
announcement for the 3900 in the digital design
magazine. it struck him so much that he went to visit
the chip designer Tom Fredericksen, to discuss the
chip with him. Serge also said his old VCO built
around one 3900 was one of the most economical VC
logarithmic units (VC waveshaping + input VC
processor).
youve got to give the man credit for stretching the
value of one chip to be able to buy in bigger
quantities :)
best wishes all
