I guess, but I'm no expert, that you, if you want only two steps, should
reset using the third output, and if you want four steps you should reset
using the fifth output and so on. If you want to use all eight steps there
is no need for reseting while the 4017 does this automatically. So, I don't
think you need to change the switch.

Okay,
I've gave it 30 seconds of though while I got a snack, and maybe I figured
out the problem. Could it be that I can't just tie reset to an output, and
expect it to end/loop at that step, without also removing the ouput? So I
would need a 2P8T switch instead?
Let me know if I'm on the wrong track.
