What you need is "remore cutoff" or "semi remote cutoff" behaviour of the
tube.
That is, you need a rather high amount of negative voltage on the grid to
turn
the tube off. I don't know if the 12AT7 fits in here - I'm pretty new to
tubes.
The 6BC8 I tested needs -12V to cut off.
