Hard to believe, but I don't play violin. On my bass guitar, (especially on my
acoustic/electric) the three other strings can contribute quite a bit of
harmonics. Depending on what sound I'm trying to get, I have to mute the strings
I'm not using. I use palm muting, fretting hand muting, picking finger muting,
and some times a piece of foam as a mute.
If I want I can get at least one or two of the strings vibrating with
sympathitic vibrations. This makes for a nice dynamic tone with the harmonic
content changing over a period of time. Unfortunately, if I'm using a high gain
setting or a module to create sub-harmonics, these sympathetic vibrations cause
intermod distortion that is horrible.
