[sdiy] Should I repair my Fostex, or should I go HD recording?

in reality, there's only 1 usb2 multiple in/out box out from Edirol. (=
roland). usb 1.1 is a joke, i have a lexicon omega system here now and it
struggles doing just 2 in/2 out at the same time. i haven't had any
experience with the edirol box yet.

the selection in firewire is much bigger and it seems to become the system
of choice.
pci in itself is not bad, but there are issues you don't have with firewire:
you have to mount the card (open up the pc, etc) some cards have issues with
irq numbers,.. it can take a while to get some cards going. firewire is
literally plug and play after installing drivers. and it'll be compatible
with any laptop if you ever want to take a system with you, and there's much
less hardware still in the pc, although that's not much of an issue anymore
these days with interference and stuff. in short, the quality is the same
but pci is more of a hassle and not portable.

i've had several firewire boxes here, and they perform very well with
minimal latency.. the only reason i'd buy pci these days would be if my pc
didn't have firewire.. but even then i'd invest a few euros in a
firewire-pci card.
