I've never been a fan of onboard DA converters.  Bringing the analog signal
inside the computer to its world of interference has always just seemed like
the wrong plan to me, although maybe someone has finally caught up with
Turtle Beach from 10 years ago and shielded the friggen card like crazy.

Anyway, I do 8 track with two maudio quattros.  I'm sure theres a better
solution these days but they work for me.  The quattro is a 4in/out USB
based box for recording to PC.  New for a pair you're looking at $400 or so,
I got mine for $125 each.  There are also quite a few decent Firewire boxes
out there ( MOTU comes to mind ) that are 8 in/out.

Once you get hardware, then you have to get software and good software is
expensive too :-(
I'm using Bias Deck these days.  Dwarfed the cost of the hardware...
