Yes, they have.  Look up the 1953 film "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.", 
starring Tommy Rettig (later of TV's Lassie, even later of Hollywood drug rehab), a 
VERY slimy Hans Conreid as the evil Doctor T., with a script and soundtrack 
written by none other than Dr. Suess.  How Dr. T. got past MIDI's 127-note 
limitation, we may never know, alas.
