The point that I was addressing is that raised by the OP, who wasn't sure 
why we discuss alternating current voltages and direct current voltages. He 
wanted to know where these terms come from and what they mean.  The 
discussion needed expansion to show why the terms are correctly applied.

If we want to digress into discussions about current sources and so on 
that's another matter ( and one well worth exploring I am sure we will all 
agree).   There may well have been further discussion that I wasn't party 
to, but the explanation I give still stands regards the terms AC voltage and 
DC voltage.

Some people would take it from this paragraph that you are not a scientist 
or an engineer in that case!

I cannot agree that forging a correct scientific explanation will add to 
confusion - if it's an incorrect or confusing summary of some aspect of 
physics then I would agree that that would be problematic. To say that 
confusion is added to by a succinct and correct definition really lays blame 
at the door of those who fail to understand that definition.
