[sdiy] ESD

Go buy a handful of blue high intensity leds, sit
down in your cubical chair and handle them and then try them. Or use one
in a front panel backlight under a button switch and get enough ESD to spark
to the button.

Subject: [sdiy] ESD

I just read a post about ESD killing blue LEDs.

I have yet to see my first ESD fatality. I have done several large CMOS
projects (80+ ICs soldered directly into the PCB). I must have soldered more
than 1000 CMOS devices. Without a single IC failure. The only protection I
use is cotton clothing and the occational grounding my right hand to the
kitchen sink. My soldering station is not even grounded.

Why is it that some have these problems and I don't?

1. Wearing synthetic fibre clothing?
X. Wearing rubber soled shoes on plastic floors?
2. Using cat skin to clean the IC before insertion?
