I built a MIDI synth module based on a AT90S8535 (2xDCO + 1st order DCF).
I also experimented with the ATmega series and managed to get 2 DCOs and a
2nd order "variable state" DCF. Drawback: the sampling frequency has to be
low,
eg. 31,25kHz. But I find it fascinating to force such general-purpose
microcontrollers
to synthesize sound!
