i've had good results with both high grade aluminum tubing and solid aluminum stock, but not so good with electrical conduit.  conduit has a seam down the side which keeps it from vibrating evenly--i've heard that if you orient the seams carefully all in the same direction it can work, but i've never had much luck.

there's also a reprint of an emi article that talks about organ chimes, with shaped metal tubes rather than simple cylinders to alter the harmonic structure... but it makes tuning much more complex: http://www.dapperdans.com/dapperdans/deagan_organ_chimes/deoc_emi_article/deoc_emi_article.htm
