That sounds like an interesting project. My initial impression is that
aluminum won't yield a very satisfactory result, but I don't have a
really good basis for saying it. I would guess that using brass or
silver would yield a good tone, since these are the materials commonly
used to make other metal instruments (brasswinds, saxophones). Perhaps
these metals have better resonance properties? I don't know enough
about materials to give a better response. Let us know how your
experiments with aluminum go.
