[sdiy] [way OT] passive volume control

Sorry for the offtopicness, but this list is where all the best answers are.

What is a reasonable value for a passive line level volume control pot? I'm
thinking 50k just as a guess.

I want one to go between a cd player and a shared mixer so I can have my own
personal volume knob.

And also for my sound card because the line input clips when I hook it to my
receiver (recording from vinyl).

Any favorite ganged stereo pots? Nice, but not ultra-fi.
