That depends on the application. If you are talking about using it as a
voltage divider, you only need to be considered about the loading
effects of whatever resistance is hanging off it. If you want it to act
like an audio taper, you can purposely put an "excessive" load on it. If
it's going to be used as a gain element in an opamp feedback loop, you
can change the other gain setting resistor and still get the same gain.
