That is not a good idea. Filing a Copyright claim is NOT expensive and
establishes
your right to recover damages should you get ripped off. Go the official route
in that case.
Patent protection is basically disclosure in return for an exclusive licence.
The best way to protect yourself, short of patent... is Trade Secret. Do not
tell ANYONE
how you are doing a thing. If they find out, they have to either steal, or
reverse engineer !
