[sdiy] Ring Modulator

Tonights project ( while waiting for paint to dry on the main project ) was
building a Ring Modulator.

Worked pretty well.

Used the Mouser 42TM018 transformer ( 10kCT x 10kCT ), built one using
1N270 diodes ( picked up surplus ) and one using 1N34's aquired from
Mouser same order at the transformers. Both sound the same at first glace
but we'll see as time goes on. I also plan, since I have 4 more
transformers and enough diodes, to build 2 more with NE571's wrapped around
the main signal path to minimize carrier bleed. Oh, I selected fairly
closely matched diodes by poking at them with my bench Fluke ( 4-1/2 digit )
Funny that the 1N270's as a whole were far more closely matched then the
1N34's.

Seems that you really need to keep signal levels low or it distorts like
crazy, but once you get levels right it sounds like, urm, a Ring
Modulator... I think now I have a use for an XR2206 function generator in a
module just to supply carrier...

Yah know, its kinda fun to built a quickie project like this... went from
bare parts to finished FracRac in about 2 hours. Well, I'll need to repaint
and put on real labels... this is actually going to be my test case for the
new water transfer labels I got to try out.
