If you mean the XLR LNE (with red inserts), they were
designed to be used for up to 240v mains, but they're
being phased out due to safety issues. Horrid things,
and I never use one unless I've personally inspected
the wiring. As a hoarder, they're one of the few things
I throw away! Using these mains connector for DC
would be a bad idea too.
There was another high current XLR standard for speaker
cables, with a white insert, the XLR EPN, but they're
not common (or cheap), and I've only seen them in
3 pin.
The big brother of the XLR is the EP connector. Not
cheap or small, but big, solid and chunky, and rated
at 20A for the 4 and 6 pin versions and 15A for more
pins. Made by Amphenol and probably Cannon.
UK prices are £3 to £9 depending on type.
