Funny you should mention that...
I started with messing with all of this stuff when tubes was all there was.
And it was pretty reliable technology considering what you were dealing with.
Unfortunately the last tube gear I dealt with was pretty horrible. Marshall
amps, mostly, and similar stuff -- even brand new tubes would be
microphonic right out of the package, and as a warranty service center (at
that time) it made things kinda rough.
I don't know if this was a matter of them being made overseas or what, at
that point in time (late 1980s, to 1992 or so), or if it was some other
factor.
Yet in doing organ work I've seen tubes that were 30 years old or more, and
were either only slightly weak or just fine, which always amazed me.
