Does it really need to be a singular 9V battery? What about a custom
battery pack of AA rechargeables? You would save a fair amount of money on
batteries in the long run, and you can build the pack with nearly any
voltage you need. Also, If one module needed a somewhat lower supply
voltage, you could probably get away with tapping the battery pack at some
intermediate voltage, just to provide power for that one module.
I think Harry's idea of generating a negative supply sounds interesting. It
would open up a lot more circuit options, if you had a negative supply
available.
A battery pack made with AA cells should give you plenty of current
capacity. I know they weigh more, and take up more space, but is it that
much of a problem? Lot's of portable gear uses AA's with no problem.
