#using stripboard again, and, again, idc style connectors.  the
interconnecting cables would have to have a different connector on each

which is no problem, but im still concerned about the current rating of
stripboard (i dont know the exact figures, but i was warned against it - on
one occasion i did manage to burn a track, but this may have been due to
some other reason, like my foolishness with something ; )

You could thicken the stripboard traces by soldering solid wire on the
heavily loaded traces.
